Mexico Here I Come!!!

Wow I can't believe I leave on Monday!!! How crazy!!  The time has completely flown by in the CCM.  Also, I leave at 2:30 in the morning... so that will be super fun.

 

I don't have much to say, but the spanish is really hard some days but other days it comes fluent.  It's really exciting to be speaking another language though, spanish is beautiful!  I just have a lot to memorize, but that'll all come in Mexico. 

 

But I am SO lucky.  During my stay in the CCM I believe that we have had 5 or 6 apostles come to visit us... Elder Christofferson, Elder Oaks, Elder Anderson, President Uchtdorf, and..... for our last Tuesday Night devotional.... ELDER HOLLAND!!!!!  Oh man, I feel so completely blessed to be at the CCM to hear such amazing apostles.  I had wanted to leave on the mission earlier, but I am SO grateful that my call wasn't until April 2.  

 

Here are some of my favorite parts from Elder Holland's talk!  

 

He spent the first 10 minutes thanking us for being on missions, and telling us how important his mission was to him.  Something he kept saying over and over was 

 

"This has to mean EVERYTHING to you."  

As in the mission.  Ahhh it hit me so hard.  Those of us on missions need to give it our ALL while we are on our missions!

 

He also talked about how PMG was made.  He said it wasn't written so that investigators could be converted.  It was written so the missionaries would be converted.  That is a very powerful statement. It just reminds me that this church isn't a missionary church.  Yes we want all people to join, but we don't recite memorized lessons.  We have to be fully converted in order to help convert others.  

 

Also, a lot of people always say that when they get back from their missions that they need to get back to "real life".  His response was: "the mission is the closest to real life we will ever get."  

 

Then he started talking about how missions are so important for the missionaries not to fall away after they get back home.  WE WILL NOT WALK AWAY, from the mission.  If we are teaching people that this church is the way to live, we need to live it forever.  Not just on the mission, but especially when we leave.  

 

Also, think about the Holy Ghost, and how LUCKY we are to have it with us!  We know that while on earth we can't be physically with God, or Jesus Christ.  But who is the 3rd member of the Godhead?  The Holy Ghost!  We get to "know what it means to walk with a member of the Godhead."  Every day, for those of us who are baptized.  We have the 3rd member of the Godhead with us ALWAYS.  As long as we are keeping the commandments and striving to do our best. 

 

One last part is about how HARD missionary work is.  "missionary work is never easy because it was never easy for our Lord, our Savior, and the Atonement."  It wasn't easy for our Savior to suffer the pains of the world, so why should we always think our lives should be perfect, even our missions?  It's not going to be easy, and it wasn't meant to be easy.  "you are going to have to suffer a little.

 

That was what I really liked from his talk.  Man, hearing Elder Holland on TV is sSOOO much different from hearing him in person.  He is such an amazing man.  

 

Also, today we got to go see the "Sacred Gifts" art exhibit at the BYU museum!  If anyone has time I highly recommend going to see it.

Week 4 - To All Missionaires

One more week gone by in the blink of an eye!

This week my companion and I hardly taught anyone.  Which was weird... but instead we were able to study more which is awesome!   Also, for those about to go on missions soon, the teachers here are the absolute best.  I LOVE THEM! 

This week went by so fast I don't even remember details.. haha sorry!  But we had another awesome experience this past week with our Tuesday night devotional!! We had Elder D. Todd Christofferson!!!!  Oh my, he did such a good job.  His talk was mainly about Trust, and how we need to earn God's trust.  And oh man it was so powerful.  One part that really touched me was he was describing the relationship between King David and God (before King David decided to do some not-so-good things)  God even said this of him: 'He is like me unto my own heart."  How AMAZING would it be to have God trust us so much that he would say that our heart, our desires, everything about us is LIKE HIM?!?  So amazing.  Another part of the talk, he said "the Lord will trust us, but not until the very end"  which had another big impact on me.  We need to be doing all we can to gain the Lord's trust.  It's not something that just comes. Which leads me to another quote.. "It is greater to be trusted than to be loved".  We know that we are all loved by our Heavenly Father.  That is just a simple fact, but can our Father trust us with his Gospel?  With His plan?  Are we willing to submit to His will and do whatever he wants us to do?  Wooow, that just hit me strongly.  Just to reiterate:  God loves, us, but he only trusts us after we are willing to follow his commandments.  That was so amazing for me to hear.  

Right after that devotional we had another cool experience with our district, when we got together to share our thoughts about the devotional.  It was SO amazing, everyone cried, because of the Spirit.  We all felt it SO strongly and were impacted by it SOO much.  The fact that my district cried is definitely significant, because they never cry... never.  It was amazing.  

One more story that was from Elder Christofferson's talk, in my own words, and with my opinion a little..

Imagine you are driving in a train looking out the window at night.  All you can see (because it is dark) is your own reflection.  You can't see out of the window, because it is so dark.  As we are driving along we know that there is a beautiful sight outside, with lots of poeple.  Now comparing this to missionary work, we are all in the train, driving though the night.  Looking outside right now we can only see the reflection of ourselves.  WE are the reason it is dark outside.  So my question is, WHEN are we/you going to let the light (of Christ) come in?  Let the sun come up and show us the way.  We need to stop focusing on ourselves and let the light come in so that our reflection isn't the only thing we see.

Sorry, I did not do that story justice, and it probably doesn't make any sense.  Just think of a train ride where it is dark, and you only see your reflection, and then at some point the light comes in and you are able to see past yourself, into the world.  And basically see others who need help.

Week 3 - Easter in the MTC :D

Hola Amigas/os!!!  Haha, so this week went by SOOO fast!  I can't believe it's P-day already.

But, I have to let you all in on some super cool news... so this week for our devotionals we not only got to hear from not one... not two... but THREE general authorities!!! Well within the past 2 weeks... The first, Neil L. Anderson, and then for Easter Sunday we got to hear from..... PRESIDENT DIETER F. UCHTDORF!!!!!! Holy blessed!!!! Ahhh his message was so good, I want to share part of it:

He talked mainly about the Resurrection, and about missionary work, but focused on two missionaries.  The first being Peter, and how before Christ was resurrected he denied him 3 times.  THREE!  Then after the Resurrection, he had a change of heart, and denied him no more.  He became a stalwart missionary after that!!  Next he talked about a missionary from 30 years ago (?) Elder Richiardi (?) who served in England.  He was the ultimate missionary, and shared his message boldly!   Every morning he would say to himself in the mirror 

"I fear no man!"

Every morning.  One of his companion's thought he was working too hard and such, but ended up learning a ton from him.  Elder R.  Would share his message with anyone and everyone, never backing down!  

So President Uchtdorf asked us "What kind of witness are YOU going to be?"

Wow.  Haha, it made me realize that I need to study a lot more and be really focused on this gospel.  Also, one other thing he said was "When people know that your love, you can never be too bold."  So love all people, and then people will want to listen to you.  That doesn't apply only to missionaries. :)    

Also, I GOT TO SHAKE HANDS WITH PRESIDENT UCHTDORF TWICE!!!  I really feel so lucky.  I sang in the choir with my friends, and if I had been sitting one row closer to the front I would have been able to shake his hand right after the devotional.  However, while we were eating dinner on West Campus he came to visit us!  So I shook his hand twice. :)  

Then this past tuesday we had another special speaker, Elder Dallin H. Oaks!!!  3 apostles, in just under 2 weeks.  His message was of course also on missionary work.  One thing that I really liked was that part of the mission includes the "challenge to Become."  As in anyone can achieve stuff.  And do stuff that we are supposed to do.  But some people go on their missions and aren't changed in their hearts.  sooo, we need to Become missionaries.  

Also, one last quote for him "Whom the Lord calls, the Lord qualifies".   So, as missionaries, or just in our callings in the church or just in life... The Lord will help us qualify for our duty/job/calling.

With investigators... My companion and I keep getting more!! It's kind of a problem.. but a good problem.  We just have a lot of people to teach but not much time to study for them.. This probably doesn't sound like much, or maybe it does.  But we were supposed to teach 5 people yesterday!  And after one lesson, we were walking to class and ran into a "gold-tag investigator"  who started talking to us and wants us to teach him.  But we can't because we have class when he wants us to teach him... 

Anyway, the language is coming.  I really understand most everything, it's just putting sentences together in my head that make sense to respond is hard.... but I'm working on it!  3 weeks down!

Everything is good.  I am healthy.  And I leave to Mexico in 2.5 weeks. WAHOO!

Week 2

So.. I can't believe it's P-day!  So here is a quick summary:

Vocal Point came to sing to us last week... WOW!!! Ahhhh it was so good to hear them since we aren't allowed to listen to any music in the MTC (besides what we sing) 

My mission president's wife is actually coming to Provo because her daughter who goes to the Y is getting married next week! I don't know if I'll see her, but I thought it was cool.

For those of my friends who know I say "pause" a lot it is "pausa" in espanol :)

I feel like in the MTC all we do is eat, study, eat, teach a lesson, study, memorize some spanish, eat again, play volleyball or four-square, and then go to bed.  I really do love my district so much, we get along super well!  On sunday we said goodbye to 4 hermanas in our District who just left to Veracruz, but one of them got her foot caught in the gym door and it is still healing, so she is staying with us for the next week or so... and we just got another district of 6 hermanas yesterday!  

On Tuesday for the devotional we were able to hear from NEIL L. ANDERSEN!!! It was so good, he is amazing!!!! They also said we have some really good speakers coming up soon, so that is exciting :)  His talk was mainly on the Book of Mormon and how we need to use it in our lives!

Quick story:  

We taught our friend N.  a couple days ago (and my spanish is not very good so I try to improvise).  We were trying to explain about how the Lamanites were enemies, but we couldn't remember the word for "enemy" so instead I said "no amigas"... which is basically "no friends".  Oops, technically it works!  Our investigator started laughing really hard at my poor spanish and said hold on so she could write it in her quote book.. #ImFamous  Also, later we were trying to say 16 but once again my spanish fled my mind, so i said "kingsay (15) despues..."  basically 15 later.. oops. I'm getting there!

We didn't teach many investigators this last week, but it was still good.  Here are some pics from the week!

Hey missionary friends!  And those who I know are planning on serving missions.. This week during my personal study I came upon a chapter I really liked and wanted to share it with you. :)  If you don't have time to read it now, print it off and read it later!  All of these verses are in Mathew 10, with my thoughts next to the verse number:

5-7:  I loved this because as missionaries we are sent to the lost sheep.  Such as the story about Jesus being the Shephard with 100 lambs and one of them was lost.  So He went out and searched even for that one lamb.  Now he is sending us to find His sheep.  

14: Holy Cow.  I LOVE THIS!  missions are hard, and we will be rejected sometimes.  It's not our fault, people make their own decisions.    So we need to "shake off the dust" and move on.  Start again the next day, because every day is a new day where a miracle can happen.  Also, think about Abinidi, how many baptisms did he have?  Technically no one.. except Alma did hear him and baptized thousands.  So just do your best!

16:  We are sent out to all parts of the world, and especially now, pepole are cunning and deceiving.  They want to lead us away but we need to be smart, but also be respectful and teach with gentleness.

20: Since I have been set apart as a missionary, and at other times, I have felt like my mouth is not my own.  The lord is already putting words in my mouth and using me as a tool for His work.  We are his instruments.  Also, we are not our own as we have been set apart.  Whose name is on our nametags?  His, and we are His representatives.  

22, 39, 40:  Missions are hard, and people will hate us for what we are doing.  But we have to look at the eternal perspective.  In 22: don't quit or go home early, ENDURE TO THE END!! Heavenly Father needs us to.  

Oh and here is a super awesome quote my companion told me about!  "Do your duty, that is best.  Leave unto the Lord the rest."  How true!  We can only do so much, but we still need to do our best.  Study, look for opportunities, act in His name.  Be ready for experiences because Heavenly Father needs to use us to reach his people.

I FOUND MY FRIEND

 

The following event took place in a ward in Salt Lake City in 1974. It occurred during Sacrament Meeting and was told to me by a Regional Representative of the twelve, who was in the meeting.  A young man, just before leaving on his mission, stood in Sacrament Meeting and bore, in essence, the following testimony.

 

"My Brothers and Sisters, as you know, during the past few weeks I have been awaiting my mission call.  During the time I was waiting I had a dream I was in the pre-existence and was awaiting my call to come to earth.  I was filled with the same excitement and anticipation that I had before I received my mission call.  In my dream, I was talking to a friend.  He was a very dear friend, and I felt a special closeness to him, even though I've never met him in this life.  As we talked, a messenger came and gave me a letter.  I knew it was my call to go to earth. In great excitement my friend and I opened the letter I gave it to him and asked him to read it aloud.  The letter said: You have been called to earth in a special time and to a special land.  You will be born into the true church, and you will have the priesthood of God in your home.  You will be raised with many advantages and many blessings.  You will be born in a land of plenty - a land of freedom.  You will go to earth in the United States of America.  My friend and I rejoiced as we read my call.  And while we rejoiced, the messenger returned.  This time he had a letter for my friend.  We knew it was his call to earth.  My friend gave me the letter to read aloud.  The letter said: You have been called to go to earth in circumstances of poverty and strife.  You will not be raised in the true church.  Many hardships will attend your life.  Your land will be fraught with political and social difficulties which will hinder the word of the Lord.  You will be born in Costa Rica.  We wept, my friend and I as we read his call.  And my friend looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, "When we are down on earth, you in your choice land and me in Costa Rica, my friend, come and find me."  Then this young missionary, with tears in his own eyes, said, "Brothers and Sisters, I have received my mission call.  I am going to Costa Rica.

First Week Down - MTC Provo

Hi everyone!!! :)  I have officially completed my first week in the MTC!! Today is my first P-day... so i went without one last week technically!!  It has been so great!!! :)  Spanish is kind of hard to pick up on... french and spanish are not similar AT ALL!!  But my companion took 3 years of Italian and has lived all over the world (she grew up in the military so she's lived in Korea, Italy, Germany, South Carolina, Pennsylvania.. i don't even remember where else!)  So she is a blessing.  She understands so much more than I do and pretty much leads the lessons.. but I am slowly getting the hang of it!  I can pray and bear my testimony in spanish.. and I know the whole "Missionary Purpose" in spanish so that is good. :)

Ahh i don't even know what to say... haha we have already taught 5 investigators only in spanish so far.  So that is cool... haha our first lesson was rough.  And we hardly have a teacher for most of the time, but it is fun!  We have 2 investigators now and my favorite one is N.. I don't know if we are allowed to use names.  But she has so many questions and even though we have only talked with her once, SHE IS AMAZING!!! So loving, and always says hi to us and gives us hugs.. she is just the best..

So, I played what are the odds this week and ate a jalepino this week....

In my "district" there are 8 of us!! 4 sisters (all of us going to Guadalajara East) and 4 elders!  All of them are going to Monterrey West (mom is that where Elder Rollins is or Elder Curtis?? I forgot..) except one elder is going to my mission as well!!! So it is super fun.  My companion is from all over the world and she really is the best.  She is a hard working, caring, funny, and yeah... I just love my companeros/as all around!!  Oh and also someone should tell Hannah Scoresby that she should send me her wedding invitation.. that would be cool.  And that Aubree Matheson's friend and a kid in Taylor Stallings ward and I think Tyson Clark's ward is in my class!  Elder Kimball.  For those friends at USU i'm sending this email to..

Oh, today we don't really get a p-day because we have to travel to the Mexican Consulate in Salt Lake to get our visas!!!  So I don't have much time to email.... but that is my week!!  All is awesome, i love mail, but really letters and DearElder is the best..

Studying Spanish !!

Last Post as a Pre-Missionary

A couple weeks ago I had my friend Carly take some mission pics.. one for my missionary plaque and then she decided to use some artistic freedom.

And I leave.... TOMORROW!!  Here is a quote I really like, so you get a little funny a little serious in my own last post.

I am part of the fellowship of the unashamed.  The dye has been cast! I have stepped over the line.  The decision has been made; I am a disciple of Jesus Christ.  I won’t look back, let up, slow down, or be still.  My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is secure.  I’m finished and done with low living, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tainted visions, worldly talking, cheap giving, and dwarfed goals.  I no longer need pre-eminence, positions, promotions, plaudits or popularity.  I now live by faith, lean on His presence, walk with patience, am uplifted by prayer, and labor with power.  My face is set, my gait is fast, and my goal is Heaven.  My road is narrow, my way is rough, my companions are few, my guide is reliable, my mission is clear! I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, divided or delayed.  I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of the adversary, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity.  I won’t give up, shut up, or let up, until I have stayed up stored up, and paid up of the cause of Christ.  I must go till He comes, give till I drop, preach till I know, and work till He stops me.  And when He returns for His own, He will have no problem recognizing me.  My banner will be clear.

Farewell Talk

Today was my farewell, although I don't leave until next Wednesday (April 2).  It was awesome.  Here is my farewell talk for those who couldn't make it, or wanted a copy of it!  Thank you to those who came and for all of the support from friends and family I have had over the years. 

"The POWER of the Book of Mormon in my life."

I would like to start off by sharing a favorite children's hymn "Scripture Power."

            1.  Because I want to be like the Savior, and I can,

            I'm reading His instructions, I'm following His plan.

            Because I want the power His word will give to me,

            I'm changing how I live, I'm changing what I'll be.

            Scripture power keeps me safe from sin.

            Scripture power is the power to win.

            Scripture power! Ev'ryday I need

            The power that I get each time I read.

            2.  I'll find the sword of truth in each scripture that I learn.

            I'll take the shield of faith from these pages that I turn.

            I'll wear each vital part of the armor of the Lord,

            And fight my daily battles, and win a great reward.

            Scripture power keeps me safe from sin.

            Scripture power is the power to win.

            Scripture power! Ev'ryday I need

            The power that I get each time I read.

Like I said, this used to be one of my favorite hymns.  It was always the best because all of us kids got the chance to raise our Scriptures above our heads as we shouted "Scripture Power!"  As much as I loved this song I didn't always know what it meant, or the full purpose of the song.

Today I would like to talk about how I found out the Book of Mormon is true, but really this is my testimony of the book.

We all have been given this book, and I would like us all to think of it as a present.   Imagine that you have a gift and you give it to a friend, but they didn't ever open the gift.  They let it sit on their bed-side table, or even under a bunch of old clothes.  They just didn't care about it.  This gift wasn't a cheapo gift.  It was a thought-out, time consuming gift that you put your whole heart into hoping that your friend would treasure it.  But, they didn't treasure it.  How would that make you feel?

Personally, I would be very disappointed.  Just as we give gifts to our friends, Heavenly Father has given us the gift of the Book of Mormon.  The writings in the book were meant for us to use in our lives.  1 Nephi 13:40

Now that we realize what a great gift this is.. we should open it! 

3 Nephi 23:5 And whosoever will hearken unto my words and repenteth and is baptized, the same shall be saved.  Search the prophets, for many there be that testify of these things.  6 And now it came to pass that when Jesus had said these words he said unto them again, after he had expounded all the scriptures unto them which they had received, he said unto them:  Behold, other scriptures I would that ye should write, that ye have not.

The first thing anyone has to do, and what I had to do is actually read the Book.  And not just "read" it to say that you did.  You have to read it will full intent to be converted unto Christ.  Moroni 7:6-8  I have now read it twice.  The first time I read it just to say I had.  This last time I read it, I really searched out answers.  I prayed hard for  to know that this book was true.  My answer did not come quickly, nor did I recognize the Spirit that was in me until I had delved deep and had studied for a long time.  I even doubted, more than I ever had before.  I was up at college this past fall semester and realized that I wanted to serve a mission but didn't think I could because I didn't know if it was true.  I didn't know for myself, because I had a lot of doubts.  But then a talk was given by Dieter F. Uchtdorf and he said "Doubt your doubts before you doubt your faith."   Mormon 9:27  At this point I had to truly have faith, which I realized I didn't have much of before.  I took a leap of faith and read the book, ignoring past feelings I have had regarding the Church.  And this is what I ask of you today, is have you really read the Book of Mormon? 

In regular school we have history classes.  What are they for anyway?  I remember one of my history teachers saying that we read and learn about our history so that hopefully we will not make the same mistakes again.  Like WW1 and WW2, but we use history as a lesson.  If you think about it the Book of Mormon is just another history textbook.  The only difference is that the Book of Mormon was written by God and his disciples, whereas our textbooks are written not by Him (Jesus Christ).  Yet we read and study our school textbooks like we should be studying the Book of Mormon.

To reiterate: the first step is to actually read the Book. The second is to find out what you really like about the scriptures and if it is true.  Moroni 10:4-5  For me, I love hearing stories.  I have loved reading ever since I was little.  I love mystery books, and really anything that has a good plot.  Guess what!  The Book of Mormon is a great drama.  It talks about wars, lessons people have learned, and really it is Another Testament of Christ.  It is truth.  We can find Christ's example and light throughout all of the chapters.  A few of my favorite characters are King Benjamin and Alma the Younger.  King Benjamin worked hard among the people and for the people so that they may prosper in the land. 

The last thing I had to do, was apply the Book of Mormon to my life.  I would like to share 1 of my favorite scriptures that I try my best to live by. 

Alma 37:37:  Counsel with the Lord in all they doings, and he will direct thee for good; yea, when thou liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God; and if ye do these things, ye shall be lifted up at the last day.

Moroni 10:32

Talk about how I am not perfect, but I use these scriptures as a guideline as to how I should act.  Even though I am not perfect, the Gospel is, and so are these scriptures.   One more scripture I would like to share is Mormon 9:31- Condemn me not because of mine imperfection, neither my father, because of his imperfection, neither them who have written before him; but rather give thanks unto God that he hath made manifest unto you our imperfections, that ye may learn to be more wise than we have been.

I know that if we read the Book of Mormon and apply it to our lives, we will be blessed.  It has so much knowledge.  My mom used to tell me stories of stupid things she has done in hope that I will not make the same mistakes.  Of course sometimes I didn't listen to her and I would have to learn my own lesson.  But, if we truly read and understand the Book of Mormon, we realize that it is a great tool.  It is an instruction manual, given to us for our use. 

A new movie came out recently called "Inspired Guns."  It is about 2 missionaries who end up being involved with the mafia.. just watch it.  During one scene of the movie 2 of the main characters who are in the mafia are told to read the Book.  And I quote- "The answers are in the Book!".  How true is that?

Heavenly Father didn't give us this book so that we could just toss it out.  He had his prophets write down their history so that we could learn from it in hope that we wouldn't make the same mistakes that they did.

In closing I would like to share a little bit of King Benjamin's knowledge:  Mosiah 1:6-7:  O my sons, I would that ye should remember these sayings are true, and also that these records are true.  And behold, also the plates of Nephi, which contain the records and the sayings of our fathers from the time they left Jerusalem until now, and they are true; and we can know of their surety because we have them before our eyes. 
7 And now, my sons, I would that ye should remember to search them diligently, that ye may profit thereby; and I would that ye should keep the commandments of God, that ye may prosper in the land according to the promises which the Lord made unto our fathers.

Now, I would not be able to say these things if I didn't know for myself that these things are true.  If you really have questions and are wondering about what church is true, READ THE BOOK OF MORMON.  Really read and ponder the book.  Study it out and truly ask God if this book is true.
